Clinical Cementation Workflow by Restoration Type

This guide outlines simple, chairside cementation steps for the most common restoration materials we deliver — zirconia, e.max (lithium disilicate), PMMA, indirect composite resin, and PFM. Use it as a quick reference at the chair.
Universal Clinical Flow
Every cementation case follows the same core sequence. Only the surface treatment in step four changes with the material.
- Try-in the restoration
- Check fit, contacts, occlusion, and esthetics
- Clean the restoration after try-in
- Prepare the restoration surface based on material
- Clean and isolate the tooth preparation
- Cement the restoration
- Seat fully with steady pressure
- Remove excess cement
- Cure if required
- Check occlusion and deliver
Material-Specific Surface Preparation
The restoration surface treatment is what changes with the material. Everything else above stays the same.
| Material | Key Surface Treatment |
|---|---|
| Zirconia | Sandblast intaglio → Apply zirconia primer if bonding is needed |
| e.max / Lithium Disilicate | HF etch intaglio → Rinse and dry → Apply silane |
| PMMA Temporary | Clean restoration → Temporary cement |
| PMMA Long-Term | Sandblast intaglio → Apply primer or bond if indicated |
| Indirect Composite Resin | Sandblast intaglio → Apply silane, primer, or bond if indicated |
| PFM Routine | Clean restoration → Conventional cementation |
| PFM Bonded | Sandblast metal intaglio → Apply metal primer if indicated |
Always follow the material manufacturer’s instructions and the cement system’s recommended clinical protocol.
