Clinical Cementation Workflow by Restoration Type

This guide outlines simple, chairside cementation steps for the most common restoration materials we deliver — zirconia, e.max (lithium disilicate), PMMA, indirect composite resin, and PFM. Use it as a quick reference at the chair.

Universal Clinical Flow

Every cementation case follows the same core sequence. Only the surface treatment in step four changes with the material.

  1. Try-in the restoration
  2. Check fit, contacts, occlusion, and esthetics
  3. Clean the restoration after try-in
  4. Prepare the restoration surface based on material
  5. Clean and isolate the tooth preparation
  6. Cement the restoration
  7. Seat fully with steady pressure
  8. Remove excess cement
  9. Cure if required
  10. Check occlusion and deliver

Material-Specific Surface Preparation

The restoration surface treatment is what changes with the material. Everything else above stays the same.

MaterialKey Surface Treatment
ZirconiaSandblast intaglio → Apply zirconia primer if bonding is needed
e.max / Lithium DisilicateHF etch intaglio → Rinse and dry → Apply silane
PMMA TemporaryClean restoration → Temporary cement
PMMA Long-TermSandblast intaglio → Apply primer or bond if indicated
Indirect Composite ResinSandblast intaglio → Apply silane, primer, or bond if indicated
PFM RoutineClean restoration → Conventional cementation
PFM BondedSandblast metal intaglio → Apply metal primer if indicated

Always follow the material manufacturer’s instructions and the cement system’s recommended clinical protocol.
